Ukrainian Design Student Award National Award for Emerging Talent in Product, Object and Industrial Design The Ukrainian Design Student Award is a national competition created to identify, support and promote the next generation of Ukrainian designers. UDSA provides students with an opportunity to present their ideas to an independent professional jury, receive expert recognition and take an important step from academic education toward professional design practice. The Award focuses on product, object and industrial design and encourages students to approach design as a discipline that combines aesthetic awareness, critical thinking, functionality, responsibility and a deep understanding of people’s needs. About the Award UDSA was established as a professional platform for discovering promising young designers and strengthening the connection between design education and the contemporary creative industry. The competition invites students to present original projects that demonstrate not only creativity, but also a mature understanding of form, function, material, context and user experience. Each submission is evaluated by an independent jury of established designers, creative directors, educators and industry professionals. The jury considers the quality of the idea, the integrity of the design concept, aesthetic sensitivity, functionality, originality and the project’s potential for further development. The Award is not limited to selecting the most visually impressive projects. Its broader purpose is to cultivate professional standards, encourage thoughtful design decisions and help students develop the ability to explain, defend and refine their ideas. Our Mission The mission of UDSA is to contribute to the development of a strong and internationally relevant design culture in Ukraine by supporting emerging talent at the earliest stage of professional formation. The Award aims to: — identify talented students and give visibility to their work; — encourage a high level of aesthetic and professional ambition; — develop critical thinking and responsibility in design; — promote respect for materials, craftsmanship, functionality and context; — connect design education with real professional expectations; — strengthen dialogue between students, educators and the design industry; — create opportunities for young designers to enter the professional community. Why UDSA Matters Professional taste is not formed through inspiration alone. It develops through observation, knowledge, discipline, constructive criticism and continuous engagement with high-quality design. For students, participation in a professional competition is an opportunity to see their work beyond the academic environment. It encourages them to evaluate their projects more critically, communicate their concepts clearly and understand how design decisions are perceived by experienced professionals. For educational institutions, UDSA creates an additional benchmark of quality and opens a wider dialogue about contemporary design education. For the professional community, the Award offers an opportunity to discover new voices, support emerging talent and contribute directly to the future of Ukrainian design. Design as a Professional Responsibility UDSA promotes the understanding of design not merely as the creation of attractive objects, but as a professional responsibility. A strong design project should respond to a real need, communicate a clear idea and demonstrate respect for the user, the material, the production process and the surrounding environment. The Award encourages students to look beyond trends and visual effects. It values projects in which aesthetics are supported by meaning, functionality and a coherent design approach. The Role of the Professional Jury The UDSA jury is composed of independent professionals with recognised experience in design, education, creative direction, manufacturing and the development of design-led projects. The jury’s role is not only to select the winning entries, but also to represent professional standards and provide students with a meaningful point of reference. Projects are assessed according to clearly defined criteria, including: — originality and strength of the concept; — aesthetic quality and integrity of form; — functionality and relevance; — understanding of materials and production; — quality of presentation; — social, cultural or environmental awareness; — potential for professional development. The independence and professional expertise of the jury are fundamental principles of the Award. Long-Term Value UDSA is conceived as more than a competition. It is an investment in the future of Ukrainian design. By recognising strong student projects and introducing young designers to professional evaluation, the Award helps build confidence, discipline and a deeper understanding of design quality. Its long-term goal is to support the formation of a new generation of designers who are capable of creating meaningful, original and internationally competitive work while contributing to the development of Ukraine’s contemporary design identity. UDSA 2026 A new generation of Ukrainian designers begins with the courage to think independently, the discipline to develop an idea and the ability to transform it into a meaningf recognises those who are ready to take this step.
